If your puppy got sick, tell us here. You get a claim number and your own private claim page, where you can add documents, see each step and write to our help desk.

Before you file
- File with Trupanion first, then AKC Pet Insurance. Your puppy came with a free 30-day Trupanion plan and 30 days of AKC Pet Insurance. If the vet visit was while a plan was on, file with Trupanion first, then send what Trupanion did not pay to AKC Pet Insurance.
- Then file here for what is left. We look only at costs our guarantee covers, and only at what is left after Trupanion and AKC decided. We never pay for the same bill twice. You can send your claim before they answer: it waits on insurance, and you add their answers later on your claim page.
- Have these ready:
- Trupanion’s answer (the “Explanation of Benefits,” or their letter saying no). If your plan had ended, proof that it ended.
- AKC Pet Insurance’s answer, or proof that you have no AKC policy or that it does not cover this
- Vet records, including your puppy’s first vet exam
- The itemized vet bill
- Proof you paid (a receipt or card statement)
- For the FUR-ever guarantee: a vet or lab report on the cause of death
- File within 30 days of the vet visit. Your puppy also needs its first vet exam within 7 to 10 days after you buy it. If either one is late, you can still send your claim, and a manager decides.

Covered genetic conditions can include the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, knees and hips, including covered surgeries. Medical coverage is up to the purchase price of your puppy.
English Bulldogs: one-year genetic guarantee.

If your puppy passes away due to a covered genetic condition, receive credit toward the purchase of another puppy:

A future-puppy purchase credit, rather than a cash refund or medical-bill payment.

The most we pay
Everything we pay for one puppy, added together, is never more than the puppy’s price.
That is the price you paid for the puppy itself. It does not count tax, fees, add-ons, microchip activation, warranty costs or shipping.
Usually covered
- A viral illness that makes your puppy sick in the first 10 days after you bought your puppy (Nevada: a viral or bacterial illness)
- A genetic problem your puppy was born with (like the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, knees or hips) that hurts your puppy’s health, for up to 2 years. English Bulldogs: 1 year.
- Bad knee, elbow or hip problems (dysplasia) in the first 30 days: a credit toward another puppy
- If you bought the 12-Year FUR-ever guarantee and your puppy dies from a genetic problem: a credit toward another puppy (100% in year 1, 50% in years 2 to 12). A vet or lab report on the cause of death is needed.
Not covered
- Routine care: deworming and parasite treatment, shots (vaccinations), teeth (dental) care, and other care to prevent problems, like flea control, stool tests and spay or neuter
- Giardia and coccidia (their deworming medicine is not paid back)
- Injuries and accidents
- Neglect. If you can’t show proof of good care (regular vet visits and shots), the guarantee ends.
- Cherry eye, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), cancer, deafness, baby teeth that don’t fall out, testicles that don’t drop, and breeding problems
- Mild knee (patella) or heart murmur problems (grade 2 or lower), and problems that only change how a puppy looks
- Allergies (food, grains, grass or the home)
- Your other pets
- Breed looks, size, weight or temper (breeds are not DNA tested)
- English Bulldogs only: cherry eye, entropion (eyelids that roll in), “loose hips,” a long soft palate, a small windpipe (trachea), skin allergies and narrow nose openings (stenotic nares)
- An emergency vet visit when you did not call our hotline first may not be covered
All of these come from your puppy agreement. Your signed agreement always decides.
As-is puppies
“As-is” means you signed the As Is Puppy Sale Agreement when you bought your puppy. A puppy bought with that agreement has no health guarantee, and claims can’t be filed for it. Not sure which agreement you signed? Ask your store.

Our guarantees come after insurance: we look only at costs our guarantee covers, and only at what is left after insurance decided. We never pay for the same bill twice. Your written puppy agreement decides. Ask your store for a copy of your written agreement any time.
