Teacup and toy puppies: what to know
"Teacup" is a marketing word, not a breed. Here is what it means, which toy breeds to look at, and how to care for a very small puppy.
General care guidance. Needs vary by species, age and health. Your veterinarian can tailor a plan for your pet.
"Teacup" is not a breed
You will see "teacup" used to sell very small puppies. It is a marketing word. The AKC says "teacup" is not a recognized size in any AKC breed.
No one can promise exactly how big a puppy will be as an adult. Look at the breed's normal adult size instead.
The AKC also warns that puppies sold as "teacup" can have health problems, starting with trouble keeping their blood sugar up.
Toy breeds to look at
If you want a small dog, start with breeds that are small by nature. The AKC lists Chihuahuas at no more than 6 pounds, Pomeranians at 3 to 7 pounds, and Yorkshire Terriers and Maltese at about 7 pounds or under.
Toy Poodles are another choice, at 4 to 6 pounds according to the AKC.
Each toy breed has its own coat care and energy level. Our breed pages show what to expect, and our team can answer questions in the store.
Feeding a tiny puppy
Very small puppies can get low blood sugar. The AKC says toy breed puppies may need four to six meals a day.
Learn the warning signs: very sleepy, weak, trembling, wobbly, or having a seizure. Call your vet right away if you see them.
Keeping a small dog safe
Tiny dogs are easy to step on. Watch your feet, and pick your puppy up in crowded places.
Use ramps or steps for couches and beds, and a gate to block stairs.
Ask kids and guests to sit on the floor before they hold the puppy, so it cannot be dropped.
